Biography
My career in Communication Studies started at New Mexico State University (NMSU). My M.A. thesis at NMSU focused on the function of place and social norms in friendship formation. In 2015, I received my master's degree from NMSU. In 2016, I enrolled in the doctoral program in communication studies at the University of Kansas (KU). My research at KU centered on interpersonal and intergroup communication in the healthcare context. My dissertation explored patient-provider communication, focusing specifically on the perceptions of provider advice for preventing type-2 diabetes.
My two most recent works have looked at expanding social science theory across intercultural contexts and understanding how communication influences perceptions of mental health treatment in families. The latter work is a collaborative effort at NMSU with two graduate students, Hannah Martinez, and Jessica Tuleassi. I teach undergraduate and graduate courses at NMSU in Las Cruces and for NMSU-Global.
