I earned my bachelor’s degree in journalism and mass communication from NMSU (2003). During that time, I worked as a reporter for the Round Up student newspaper.
After graduating, I spent about 10 years working as a newspaper journalist. I first worked as a copy editor/page designer, then as a reporter, and finally as special sections editor. In 2013, I started working in the NMSU Marketing and Communications office, where I am now the Director of Communications and Media Relations.
As my career focus has shifted to include a broader communication focus than just journalism and one-directional communication, I felt it was really useful to better understand how people communicate, so I can bring that into my work and be more effective in strategically planning the university’s communication efforts. NMSU’s graduate program has really great professors who are very invested in the success of their students and passionate about their research.
A fun fact about me: Before I switched my major to journalism as an undergrad, I was a vocal music major. I still enjoy performing in operas and musical theater when I get the chance.
